When did we figure out that we did not have an everlasting supply of water?

Well, for as long as there is water on earth or hydrogen and oxygen, humans will have a supply of water. Sea water is drinkable, it is just a matter of filtering and purifying it to just water, as it contains many pollutants and harmful substances and salt. If hydrogen is burned with oxygen, water forms. This can be condensed into a liquid and used to drink as it would be pure water. There is not an everlasting supply of pure groundwater, as springs dry up because underground wells can only hold so much. Over time, these springs will fill back up from rainfall which is filtered through the ground and then porous rock into the underground aquifer. So as long as humans can take the initiative and make water drinkable, there will be a supply of water; just might cost more.
