Popcorn was discovered thousands of years ago by Native Americans. The natives passed on their popcorn knowledge to the English immigrants in the 16th and 17th centuries, and popcorn later became a widespread snack during the Great Depression.
“We” as westerners discovered popcorn along with “discovering” the Americas in the late 1400s. Columbus brought popcorn back to Europe after find that the natives he encountered were using it to make head dresses. Unfortunately there is no record of when this tradition began though evidence has been found from as early as 4,000 ago. Its use was also widespread all the way from the Caribbean islands of Columbus’ land fall and Mexico to the Great Lake region.
