In 1776 Alessandro Volta collected gas from gassy bubbles in a lake and called it ‘inflammable air from marshlands.’ In 1778 Volta was able to isolate methane from the gas. Yet people have known about methane’s existence for thousands of years. For example, as early as 940 B.C., the Chinese used methane gas in their production of salt.
