in 1730 Servigton Savery combined numerous artificial magnets with a pole at each end to creat the first compound magnet. In 1740, Gowen Knight took it a step further and created magnets for sale, which were for scientifical work and earth navigation purposes.
As I researched your question, it was clear that there are a few myths about the history of magnets. Here are a couple sites to check out. You can choose to beleive or simply be entertained. It does seem though, that the Chinese in the 4th century B.C.E were the first to reference magnetism.
