Black holes, since they cannot be seen, have never been ‘discovered’ but we do know of their existence because of their effect on the space around them. The basic concept was first proposed in 1783 by John Michell who believed it possible for matter to implode upon itself. Though many tinkered with the calculations, it was Albert Einstein who made the first real breakthroughs regarding the physics of black holes in 1915 and fellow physicist Karl Schwarzschild solidified his calculations in the months following. Their work laid the foundation for all future study on the size, movements and nature of all black holes in the universe.
