When did we decide that asbestos was a dangerous chemical?

The dangers of asbestos use were recorded as early as during the Roman Empire. In 1897 a Viennese scientist associated breathing and emaciation problems with asbestos inhalation. The first recorded case of an asbestos-related death was the 1906 autopsy of an asbestos worker. And, in 1908 insurance companies began reducing policies and benefits for those working closely with asbestos, a signal that they were unwilling to invest in these individuals knowing the health hazards of the substance.
