First introduced for bathroom wall coverings in the 1950’s, NASA immediately saw  the potential of Mylar for use in space. When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969, he wore gold Mylar. What makes the material so useful is its ability to reflect the sun while retaining heat. Now the blankets are used for camping and emergency uses. They are made of aluminum and can retain 97% of heat loss.
