Treating sewage started in the year 1900. Before that, not a single city had any sort of formal sewage treatment process. The first two cities to have formal sewage treatment for Worchester, MA and Reading, PA. By 1925, 20 of the cities with populations over 100,000 had sewage treatment facilities. From there it rapidly expanded to where it is today.
