In modern times, the red rose is considered a symbol for love.  Roses of other colors mean different things.

For example, a white rose symbolizes purity and innocence, while a yellow rose symbolizes friendship.  The blue rose symoblizes the quest for the unobtainable. The reason is that blue roses do not occur in nature, they lack the pigment.
