When did ridesharing services start becoming popular?

Ride-sharing (or carpooling) has been around, at least formally, since the 1970s.  Oil conservation efforts during WWII advocated carpooling; HOV (High-Occupancy Vehicle) lanes definitely help promote ride-sharing/carpooling.

California started a formal ride-share program around 1988 when the Riverside County Transportation Commission started to look into computer-assisted carpool/ride-shares.

Flexcar was started in 1998, and Zipcar in 2000.
