When did the red stag come to New Zealand?

European settlers introduced the red stag to New Zealand in 1851. They had loved to hunt red stag at home and saw the habitat in New Zealand as ideal for introduction. It was–too perfect, and the red stag had no predators to worry about, causing it to be the most common deer species in the country. Red stags are among the largest deer species, reaching 400lbs.
