Recycling has been around as long as it has been cheaper to reuse something rather than create another. Production of new goods effectively became cheaper than reusing them around the industrial revolution. However during this era recycling was still practiced on a household scale to save money. Large-scale recycling programs came about during the 1930s-1940s due to the United States and other countries wanting to save expensive materials during war-time. The post-war increase in production caused these programs to stop but new ones were instituted in the 1970’s.
