The 2012 phenomenon (myth) has been predicted during the Mayan times according to the Mayan Long Count Calendar. It is supposed to be the end of a 5125 year old cycle in this calander.
The blame for the 2012 myth seems to rest with new age science fiction authors such as Daniel Pinchbeck, Graham Hancock, Jose Auguelles, and Zecharia Sitchin, who introduced their theories in the 70s and 80s. These authors and gurus mixed poorly translated Mayan texts with Sumerian mythology and Judeo-Christian tradition. The Mayan calender does end in 2012, but the Mayans didn’t expect the world to end on that date. Instead, they expected to start another calender cycle at year 0.
