The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) determined that the Giant Panda was to be protected under Appendix I of the protection act on March 14th, 1984. There are currently less than 2500 pandas living in the wilds though many zoos around the world are trying to boost captive populations by breeding.
