When did the Navy start using nuclear power for their submarines?

January 17, 1955.  That was the day the USS Nautilus put to sea, which was the US Navy’s (and the world’s) first nuclear-powered submarine.  Up until the Nautilus, navy submarines were short-range underwater torpedo boats that needed to surface often to recharge their batteries.  Nuclear power meant that submarines could stay underwater for months at a time.
