January 17, 1955. That was the day the USS Nautilus put to sea, which was the US Navy’s (and the world’s) first nuclear-powered submarine. Up until the Nautilus, navy submarines were short-range underwater torpedo boats that needed to surface often to recharge their batteries. Nuclear power meant that submarines could stay underwater for months at a time.
