The first photograph of Earth was taken on August 23, 1966. The picture was taken from the moon’s orbit by the spacecraft Lunar Orbiter 1 (during its 16th orbit). The camera actually took up at least one third of the space of the spacecraft. While other photographs had been taken by rockets and satellites in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, none of them had taken a full image view of Earth.
