When did Mozambique have its first free elections?

Mozambique began holding free, democratic elections in 1994. Their election came about 6 months after South Africa’s movement towards democracy. Prior to 1994, power in a lot of African nations was taken by brutal warfare and colonial “right.” Most of Africa was divided into colonies by European countries in the past, mainly Britain, France, Portugal, and Spain (among others). The elections that began in 1994 were a major win for peace.
