When did humans start to realize the dangers of overhunting a species?

This idea has been understood for years as man has watched such animals as the buffalo and the mammoth teeter near extinction or go away all together. Native American peoples would move around with their game in order to keep populations up but a lack of unerstanding or a lack of care allowed Europeans to almost wipe out this animal. The understanding of this issue comes early but the action against it has always come later for humans. Now the World Resources Institute estimates there are over 8000 protected areas world wide helping to protect endangered animals from extinction.
