Now called Gondwana, the supercontinent separated from Laurasia 180-200 million years ago.
Gondwana is still breaking apart. The East Africa Rift zone, actively separating East Africa from the main part of Africa, is part of this dismemberment. The widening of the Red Sea, rifting Arabia from Africa, also continues at present and is also part of Gondwana’s breaking apart. So it is an ongoing process that began about 180 million years ago but continues now.
