When did the first people arrive on New Zealand?

The first recognized people of New Zealand were the Maori, and they were the descendants of a group of Polynesians who first arrived on the island of New Zealand from South East Asia.  The exact date of the Polynesian settlement in New Zealand is unknown, but in the past historians believed it was between 950 and 1130 AD.  That is now up for debate as many aspects of what historians used to believe about the arrival of people to the land is now up in the air.
