The first people who arrived in Hawaii were the Polynesians. They arrived on the islands between 200 and 600 A.D. Even though the Polynesians were there for many centuries before anyone else arrived, Captain James Cook is credited with discovering the islands in 1778.
Hawaii has long been inhabitated by indigenous peoples with a complex and beautiful culture that has been largely preserved. It appears as though the first inhabitants arrived there in 400 A.D. This group would have been a blend of different people groups from New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. In 1300, Tahitians started arriving in Hawaii and conquered the original residents. Western infiltration did not occur until the mid 1700s.
