When did animals first evolve to have few offspring and take care of them, as opposed to producing many offspring but abandoning them?

Animals have been producing small amounts of young and caring for them for as far back as we know. Evidence indicates that dinosaurs cared for their young, and there are plenty of animals that produce tons of offspring and abandon them, such as sea turtles.
