When did European explorers first reach East Africa?

Eastern Africa, due to its lack of precious resources, was one of the last areas explored by Europeans. In 1497, the first exploration of African countries like Kenya began and European conquests soon spread from the Red Sea to Somalia within twenty years. As time went on, Europeans exercised further control and domination over their African colonies, spreading further and further inland over the next centuries.
