The EPA was established in 1970 and got to work right away.  In 1971, the EPA banned the use of lead-based interior paints in houses and residences built by the US government.  In 1972, it made its first all-out ban, banning the use of the pesticide DDT which was found to accumulate in the food chain and cause cancer.
