About 4,000 years ago. The Egyptians were the first to actually use cats in order to kill pests and other mice. From there, the domesticated cat can be traced to Europe where it went with the Pilgrims to N. America. From Ancient Egypt, cats (both short and long haired) can be traced to India, Turkey, Iran, and China.

Over 10,000 years ago, domestic cats arose from the Middle Eastern wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica). It is believed that Middle Eastern farmers were the first to domesticate these wildcats.
