California first began using wind farms in the 1980’s. By the mid 1990’s, California produced 30% of the world’s wind power, though now Texas has surpassed this percentage. Today California has 4 major wind farms that remain operational; two are in central California, along with a wind power plant, and the other two reside in the eastern part of Southern California. Today wind power supplies about 5% of California’s total power usage.
