I think it was the overall perception that a lot of people had that bottled water was better than tap water and that tap water was contaminated. In reality, almost all tap water in America is perfectly fine to drink, but the fact that people had the idea that bottled water was like a new health craze made it catch on as a big trend. It was suddenly essential for a portion of the population to only drink bottled water, and that’s where we went wrong.
George Carlin had an interesting theory on this one. He noticed a correlation in the multiplication of water bottles on the shelves and the recommendation that adults drink 8 glasses of water per day. He speculated that the latter was a ploy by the beverage companies.
