The EPA banned almost all asbestos containing products on July 12th 1989. Of course, that doesn’t mean that every single house instantly had to be changed. It did mean that from that point on, houses needed to replace their asbestos with more health-friendly and enviornment friendly insulation. So began the phase out of asbestos in America.

In case you’re wondering why exactly the EPA banned asbestos, it’s because of the detrimental health effects on humans. Asbestos inhalation can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma (another type of cancer affecting the thin membranes surrounding your lungs, heart and chest cavity), and asbestosis, a non-cancer lung disease.
