I think Kenyan born Wangari Maathai had much to do with enlightening the world of the environmental conservation needed in Africa. As founder of the Green Belt movement in 1986, she began by fearlessly protecting the trees in Uhuru Park and continued to establish conservation programs in many African nations. She was not only the first woman to receive a doctorate degree in East and Central Africa but was also recipent of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. She remains a pioneer for environmental conservation in Africa and around the world.
