The first protected game reserves in both Africa and South Africa were established in the 1890s.  Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is the oldest in Africa, and was founded in 1896.  In South Africa, the Sabi Game Reserve was founded in 1898 by the South African Republic and still exists today under its new name, Kruger National Park.
