The Fashion Encyclopedia cites the 1950s and early 1960s as the years when aerosol hairspray first took off. The aerosol can had been invented during WWII, and a series of hairstyles that required the spray became very popular later on, including the beehive and the bouffant. The musical Hairspray is based on the early 1960s. Aerosol hairspray was not as popular during the later 60s and 70s, but came back in style in the 80s, with men starting to use the product as well.
