If you are looking to plant acorns to create new trees, the best time to collect them is just as they begin to fall, which is usually in early October. A suggested way to check the ones you’ve collected for viability is to put them in a pail of water for a day, and the ones that float won’t be great for growing. As for using acorns as food, the websites I’ve come across have mentioned September as the month to go out and collect them–so, pretty much as soon as they begin to fall.
