China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and Taiwan all have their versions of shark fin soup. Originally it was eaten as a sign of wealth, since the soup can cost around $100. There are various types of shark fin soup coming from many different species of shark, and depending on the species, the costs have lowered for the soup. CNN reports that buffets have been known to sell it for $10 a bowl.
According the documentary Sharkwater (which focuses on this exact topic), hunters do not discriminate against the type of sharks. All sharks can be in danger “regardless of age, size, or species.” Because it is a rather unmonitored operation, the film estimates that around 100 million sharks are killed a year to support this industry.
