Paper currency was first introduced in China under the Tang dynasty during the 7th century.
While there is no single person or date attributed with the introduction of paper currency, it is believe to have been originated in China around 800 A.D. China was in the midst of a severe shortage of copper at the time and developed paper currency to cope with the problem. Europe adopted the paper currency in the mid 1600’s and it took many years before it became the standard that it is today.
