Like most domesticated plants, the origins of garlic are not recorded.  However, records indicate that it was grown about 3,500 years ago, which means it was likely domesticated around 5,000 years ago.  It evolved in the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

It is thought to have been originated from Central Asia because it was acknowledged in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Indian, and Chinese writings. It was domesticated around 3000 BC, so about 5000 years ago.
