Chili peppers were first domesticated in various parts of the South and Central Americas, at least 6000 years ago.

There is evidence for the domestication of the chili pepper (through preserved seeds) from 6000 years ago in the Teyuacan Valley.  The peppers were also traded at this time, and were popular in the Americas.  Amazingly, this pre-dates the usage of pottery in the Americas.
