when and how do I prune a flowering crab

The best time to prune a flowering crab is in early spring, before it leafs out.  Open the crown by removing some of the inner branches – this will enable the tree to get more sunlight.  Always cut back to lateral branches and never leave any stubs.  Rapidly growing shoots from branches, roots, or the base of the tree, as well as any dead, diseased, damaged, and crossing branches should all be removed.
