Food poisoning is usally caused by poor handling, preparation or storage of food, leading to contamination by bacteria, virus, parasites or prions (an infectious protein cell). Foodborne illnesses can also be caused by chemicals, pesticdes, medicines, or food products naturally toxic to humans like poisonous mushrooms. The best way to prevent food contamination is regular hand-washing by anyone who handles food.
