What’s the difference between a city and a town?

A city is an official, nationally recognized, self-governing entity that has been incorporated within designated city limits. There is no official definition of a town. Many times cities can also be referred to as towns. Recognized communities that are not officially cities (for instance, a neighborhood within an unincorporated county) can also be referred to as towns.
