Aquaponics is closed loop cultivation of plants and animals in a water based environment. For example, animal waste feeds the plants (high in nutrients) which in turn clean the water (high waste content is toxic to the animals) which is in turn used by the animals who also eat some portion of the plants.
Aquaponics involves really simple logic. Its just the incorporation of symbiotic organisms into an aquatic habitat. Fish couldn’t naturally survive in water without plants to clean it, and plants couldn’t survive in water without animal waste to nourish it.
Its very similar to the relationship between trees and mammals, where we exhale CO2, which the plants then use and emit O2.
An aquaponic environment mimics the natural world more accurately.
