Yucca Mountain is a nuclear waste repository in Nevada.
Yucca Mountain is the first ever site in America purposed to become a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel rods and radioactive waste. The Department of Energy submitted an application to build the facility on June 3rd, 2008. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is in charge of reviewing the application and deciding if it will be allowed, the estimated time for the decision will take about 3 to 4 years. The problem is that some radioactive wastes can take over 100,000 years before they settle to radioactive level considered safe. One issue is storage, building something that can contain radioactive materials for over 100,000 years. In so much time anything could happen. Corrosion may occur leaking some radioactive waste or an earthquake could cause large amounts of radioactive materials to become exposed. Another major problem is public approval, who wants a radioactive storage facility close to where they live?
