The Yucca Mountain project was a proposal to build a nuclear waste dump or repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. It was signed off on by President Bush in 2002, but never fully gained speed or developed. In February of 2011, President Obama proposed his 2012 budget. In this budget plan, zero dollars were set to be allocated for the Yucca Mountain project from the nuclear waste fund.
The Obama administration budget released in February confirmed the end of the Yucca Mountain project. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will not seek any money in 2012 from the fund dedicated to the proposed nuclear waste repository. The plan must be cleared by Congress and there was indications there would be a huge fight to obtain clearance.
