I’m tempted to say “humanity,” but I’m not quite sure we’ve saved ourselves yet. So instead I’ll say the “Kirtland Warbler,” a beautiful yellow bird that nests in jack-pines and sand-dunes. In the early 1970s, the Kirtland Warblers were in danger of being wiped out due to deforestation and fires, but have since made a comeback. The Warblers are not out of the woods (ha, ha) yet. There are still fewer than 1,000 pairs in the United States, but the situation is not as dire as it once was.
