A lot of earthquakes are of relatively low magnitude, but its thought that Southern California experiences somewhere around 10,000 earthquakes per year.
1954 saw twelve earthquakes above a 5.9 magnitude. Other years (1980, 1994) experienced up to six or seven earthquakes above 5.5 magnitude.
Surprisingly, Alaska outnumbers California in total percentage of earthquakes.
In 1954, California had 12 earthquakes with a magnitude over 5.0. This is the most earthquakes California has had over 5.0 since 1769. Keep in mind that smaller earthquakes happen all the time, but they aren’t significant enough to be recorded like these other ones.
