The worst ENSO event in at least a century and probably in recorded history occurred in 1982-83. Economic damages were estimated at $8 billion worldwide, and 1,000–2,000 people died directly or indirectly from the event. During this ENSO event, equatorial waters warmed by an average of 2 degrees Celsius, with the warming along coastlines exceeding 6 degrees Celsius. Also, the trade winds actually reversed directions.
