Oil burning furnaces came about shortly after forced-air furnaces were introduced to homeowners in 1935. These models, which utilized fans to distribute heated air through ducts into the home, dominated the market until the advent of both gas and oil forced air furnaces took over. These were much more preferable to the coal models, as users no longer had to monitor and stoke the coal fire. Today, 9% of homes are heated with oil forced-air furnaces.
