I would take my elementary class for monthly walks through a local nature preserve to teach them about all of the ways plants and animals adapt throughout the course of the year. These lessons can be extended to the classroom and go with the kids into their homes as well. The reason for this strategy is that kids need to learn to love nature before they can be concerned with preserving it. Teach them the wonders of now natural systems work and keep them interested in learning more to help them develop a sustainable mindset from an early age.
