What would it take to enforce higher taxes for people who buy vehicles that pollute way more than ordinary motor vehicles?

In a way, they already have to pay higher taxes because of the gas fuel tax. Fuel taxes range from 8 to over 32 cents per gallon, with each state deciding on a different number. In addition to this, divers have to pay sales tax on their fuel purchases. Finally, such vehicles tend to cost more than smaller cars, meaning a higher sales tax. Clearly, it is at a tax advantage to drive a smaller and less polluting vehicle, especially in the states where the gas and sales taxes are at the top of the charts.
