The ozone layer is an essential defense mechanism for the Earth and its inhabitants, which serves primarily to block radiation from the sun (specifically UVB) from reaching the Earth’s surface. As the ozone layer is depleted, more and more of this radiation reaches the Earth, and this can have serious consequences not only for humans, but for all living things. Already in humans, the impact of the destruction of the ozone layer can be seen in the increased health problems associcated with UVB exposure, namely skin cancer and cataracts. UVB exposure has also been shown to have an adverse effect on the immune system, and on marine and terrestrial plants.
Though it’s unlikely that the ozone will ever be fully depleted, if it were, the radiation on Earth would be so intense, that it would not be able to support life.
