For the most part, sending batteries to the landfill fills them up and potential leaks toxic metals into the ground and water table. Batteries comprise 20% of the hazardous materials in landfills, and they leak toxic metals when their casings are destroyed which is what happens in landfills. This is why it is suggested to use rechargeable batteries because they can be reused 1000 times.
